Celebrations of the Lunar New Year at Central West Shopping Centre
A Vietnamese inspired Lunar New Year display
Though we often think of Lunar New year as a Chinese celebration, it is actually celebrated around the world by many ethinicities. Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebrations, known as Tết Nguyên Đán or simply Tết, is the most important holiday in Vietnam. The Lunar New Year display used in Tết celebrations have some similarities to Chinese Lunar New Year. But also key differences that reflect Vietnam’s unique culture.
In the north, peach blossoms (hoa đào) are used for decoration, symbolizing good fortune and strong vitality, and in the south, yellow apricot blossoms (hoa mai) are more common, representing wealth and prosperity. These flowers are distinct from China, where plum blossoms and cherry blossoms are more widely used.
Festive lanterns are used for both Vietnamese and Chinese celebrations. But for Vietnamese displays they are typically simpler and less extravagant than the massive lantern festivals in China. For this Vietnamese Lunar New Year display we incorporated the colours of the peach and apricot with pink and yellow rather than the common Chinese red. The lanterns were a traditional shape of the Vietnamese celebrations.
Lion dances are popular in both cultures. But Vietnam also has Múa Lân (Vietnamese-style lion dance), featuring a unicorn (Kỳ Lân) instead of the traditional Chinese lion for Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebrations.
The key display feature of the Vietnamese Luanr New Year Displays at Central West shopping centre was our beautiful Zodiac gazebo with detailed zodiac signage and a sweeping blossom tree. The Gazebo structure created a stunning walk through display, able to be activated unsupervised through the whole festivities.

Key features of the display
- Hanging coloured fabric lanterns from the roof of the centre on gold poles
- 2m LED rings decorated in blossom and zodiac snake signage, sitting on a red display box and large circular printed floor decal
- Large gold gazebo decorated in a zodiac calendar with walk through access. A large sweeping blososm tree over hung with lanterns and ribbon to complete the look. The floor of the calendar was a large year of the snake custom decal
- Centre activations of children’s activities and of course lion dancing.
