In the lead-up to Christmas 2021, Prahran Market—Melbourne’s iconic food and produce destination—commissioned The Festive Store to deliver a custom-designed festive installation. The brief was clear: create a visually cohesive and engaging Christmas display built around a food theme, perfectly aligned with the market’s vibrant culinary identity.
A food-themed Christmas installation presented the perfect opportunity to inject personality, colour, and playfulness into the festive season. Our design team leaned into the whimsy and nostalgia of holiday treats, drawing inspiration from classic Christmas icons such as gingerbread men, Christmas puddings, candy canes, and cherries. These motifs were selected not only for their festive familiarity but also for their bold shapes and cheerful colour palettes, which added a sense of warmth and delight to every corner of the precinct.
Creative Use of Space in a Bustling Retail Environment
Prahran Market is a bustling environment, particularly during the busy holiday season. With space at a premium and high foot traffic a given, it was essential that our Christmas display enhanced the customer experience without obstructing it. Our solution was to go vertical—suspending large one-metre commercial Christmas wreaths from the overhead roof struts and awnings throughout both internal and external areas of the centre. This approach allowed us to introduce impactful splashes of festive colour and texture while maintaining the open, welcoming flow of the market.
These wreaths were not off-the-shelf products—they were carefully curated and custom-decorated to complement the broader food theme. In addition to the wreaths, we incorporated a series of commercial Christmas trees, standing at 12 and 9 feet tall, which were positioned at key locations throughout the centre. These trees were pre-owned by Prahran Market and professionally styled by our team at The Festive Store to reflect the vibrant food-inspired concept.
Custom-Printed Decorations with Culinary Charm
A standout feature of the Prahran Market Christmas displays was the use of custom-printed PVC discs, which added a unique branded element to the installation. These discs featured fun and instantly recognisable festive imagery: jolly gingerbread men, plump Christmas puddings, ripe cherries, and of course, traditional red-and-white candy canes. The discs were placed on the Christmas trees and wreaths to reinforce the food motif and create a cohesive visual narrative across the precinct.
In addition to custom elements, the displays were complemented by commercial-grade, UV-stable decorations. This included oversized candy-striped pieces, baubles in bright festive colours, and decorative picks to add depth and texture. Every component was carefully selected to ensure durability, safety, and visual impact, especially in a semi-outdoor retail setting like Prahran Market.
A Festive Update to a Market Icon
To further integrate the display into the market’s unique identity, we extended the installation to include a charming makeover of the vintage Prahran Market truck. This beloved fixture was transformed into a festive focal point, complete with a display of Christmas trees, stacked presents, and food-themed decorations. This element served as both a visual delight and a popular photo opportunity, encouraging engagement from marketgoers and enhancing the overall holiday atmosphere.
From Concept to Completion
Our team at The Festive Store managed the project from start to finish—handling concept development, creative design, print production, installation, and eventual dismantling. Every element was carefully considered to meet the needs of a busy commercial setting while staying true to the joyful, flavour-filled Christmas theme. The result was a warm, modern holiday aesthetic that retained strong ties to tradition through its use of beloved festive icons.
