One of our favourite projects from 2019, this sustainable Christmas decorations project at Casselden Place in Melbourne challenged us to rethink the traditional commercial Christmas tree. Working with CBRE, the brief was to create a contemporary Christmas installation that avoided plastic decorations while still delivering the colour, light and visual impact expected from a major commercial Christmas display. Our response was to move away from traditional artificial greenery and develop something completely different.
Sustainable Christmas decorations in colour
The result was our custom-designed plywood Christmas tree range. Created from timber ply, the trees featured a simple geometric form that gave the display a distinctly modern feel. Different sizes were grouped throughout the building to create scale and interest, while bold colour and lighting brought the installation to life. The natural timber finish remained an important part of the design, allowing the material itself to become a feature rather than simply a structure hidden beneath decorations.
The project demonstrated that sustainable Christmas decor doesn’t need to look rustic or understated. Sustainable materials can form the basis of a strong contemporary design while still creating the sense of occasion and festive impact required in a commercial environment. Importantly, the plywood trees were designed as durable display pieces rather than single-use decorations. Their modular, reusable design allowed them to become part of our Christmas collection and be used again in future installations – extending their life well beyond one Christmas season.
Sustainable approach to Chritsmas decorations
Casselden Place became one of the projects that helped shape our approach to more sustainable commercial Christmas displays. It encouraged us to explore alternative materials, rethink traditional Christmas forms and consider how good design can reduce reliance on conventional plastic decorations.
