Returning for 2025 with even more sparkle, this much-loved Christmas installation transforms the elegant Duke of York square into a community artists trail. Inspired by the classic carol, the display invites visitors to step through a beautifully curated trail, where each verse is brought to life through art, florals, and intricate design.

A London high street Christmas experience

During a visit to London last Christmas, I was lucky enough to wander through one of the most enchanting festive installations I’ve seen: The 12 Days of Christmas at Duke of York Square in Chelsea.

This amazing trail is really something special as it is completely owned and shared by the local community and is bringing a local intrepration of the 12 days story through a creative collaboration between floral artist Ruth Davies of All for Love London and fashion illustrator Susannah Garrod.

Their combined talents result in a series of whimsical, artful vignettes that blend botanical beauty with storytelling illustration. Each scene feels thoughtfully composed—layered with texture, colour, and festive detail.

What makes this installation truly memorable is the sense of discovery. Visitors experience moments of awe, laugh at the playful details and pause to take in each scene. As they explore the square, they naturally spend more time engaging with the display.

The experience encourages visitors to search high and low for the characters from The Twelve Days of Christmas. Maids-a-milking, lords-a-leaping and many other familiar figures appear throughout the displays.  As a result, the display becomes more than a collection of festive decorations. It transforms into an interactive Christmas trail that appeals to families, couples and visitors of all ages.

Another standout feature is the scale of the installation. Along the full length of the square, visitors discover around 20 individual festive scenes. Each vignette offers its own creative interpretation of the much-loved Christmas carol. From elegant dancing ladies to playful pipers, every display invites visitors to stop, explore and take photos. Consequently, the installation encourages longer dwell times while creating memorable Christmas experiences that people want to share.

And then there’s the showstopper at the final point of the square – the giant partridge perched within a towering 35-foot Norway Spruce “pear tree.” It’s the kind of centrepiece that stops you in your tracks, combining humour, creativity, and festive grandeur in one unforgettable moment.

Magical Christmas experiences - once in a lifetime

What stood out most during my visit was the atmosphere. Chelsea already feels magical at Christmas. However, this installation adds a sense of intimacy and craftsmanship that sets it apart from larger commercial displays. Every element feels carefully curated rather than crowded. As a result, visitors can slow down, appreciate the details and enjoy a more personal festive experience.

The 12 Days of Christmas Trail is also highly accessible. It is free to visit and sits within one of London’s most stylish neighbourhoods. Consequently, it offers a festive experience that feels both premium and welcoming. Whether you are enjoying a leisurely walk or planning a full day of Christmas shopping and dining along King’s Road, the trail is a memorable highlight of Chelsea’s festive season.

Above all, the display shows how a community can create a destination that benefits both local residents and visitors. It celebrates the character of the neighbourhood while staying true to its values and community spirit. At the same time, it attracts thousands of visitors each year, helping to support local businesses throughout the Christmas season. The investment in design, installation and programming clearly delivers lasting value for the precinct.
